These are the days

These are the days of wonder and excitement
Everything is so full of life
There’s no need for grief and misunderstanding
Everything will be all right

We trip the wires and walk the long, long road away
We smile as we try to run a little faster
And every road we tread is one more behind us
It’s like that until we die

These are the days of miracles and magic
My sarcasm seems wan and out of place
These creatures who bow before us
Were once runners of this human race

We drink the wine and celebrate the passing of one into the other
We like to think we know the riddle to the joke
And every road we tread is one more put behind us
Pushing anew at yet another yoke

These are the days of mystery and tragedy
We learn to walk before we talk before we think
One more mile of empty houses enfold us
Before our iceberg hits us we must sink

We hold aloft the olive branch above us
We hold back the jungles with our mighty swords of truth
And every road we tread is one more behind us
How can we do this to our youth?

Somewhere inside somewhere inside of us
We left the fire to go out
And now we reap the coals of our malevolence
The warmth we claim to do without

These are the days of holy matrimony
With these here rings I bind thee to me
I’m willing to give up Saturday afternoons
If you are willing to forgive my polygamy

We grasp pretension in our swollen fists and scream at the sky
We’ve suckled at the breast of greed for all our time
And every road we tread is one more behind us
So why do we continue to whinge and whine?
